Best Use for Web Networking

As I talk to more and more people about what they would like to see in Tarboro's future, none of their suggestions are out of reach.  Many are simple changes that will improve the quality of life here, but each will require a plan of action and a few dedicated people working to make it happen.

discuss.jpgSo many of you web-readers have full lives and busy schedules that the idea of physically attending any additional meetings seems out of the question, but you have knowledge and resources of which we could all benefit.

I've been trying to think how this webspace can be best used to help coordinate the many little projects and help them to come to fruition.  I am considering having separate discussion boards for each idea that needs development.

I could create a GOT Projects main category with a sub-category discussion board for each of the projects.  These discussion boards could allow readers to create an ongoing (on-GROWing) interactive dialogue for the wants, needs and how-tos of each specific project.

Here are a few projects:

  1. Ways to improve our schools / educational offerings
  2. A FREE weekly community newspaper / Networking ALL of the residents.
  3. A food buying group / Food coop / wholefood grocer / farmers market.
  4. An Artists Cooperative / Arts & Crafts marketplace / workspace/gallery
  5. Local Political Activism / selecting & supporting leadership that will guide us into a fruitful future.
  6. Job creation / Attracting Businesses / Rethinking Income Methods
  7. Town Promotion / Tourism / Revitalization

Before I do the work, I'd like your feedback.  Do you think it will be useful?  Do you think it is a good way to get the most out of ALL interested people?  Do you think that online discussions will help us to achieve our goals?

Many people email their ideas, questions and comments to me. I'd like them to provide topic specific boards where they can share these thoughts and allow everyone to respond.

Don't make me figure this out by myself.  Talk to me!

I think a discussion board is an excellent idea! It sure would make communication with other members of the community a whole lot easier.

I agree. I think that it will get some ideas flowing. But, regardless of what anyone says, we have got to get a majority of active voters to actually agree with the idea to get some changes. Regardless of political affiliation, I believe that our current "leaders" are not actively serving Tarboro's needs.

I would like to get a more clear understanding of what expectations some have of exactly what actions the town council should be taking. I have more of an expectation that the town council not be a roadblock and should be supportive of positive ideas, but never viewed them as being the "driver" of change.
Even back in the 1960s and 70s, Tarboro had the Tarboro Merchants Assoc and later the Chamber of Commerce (and good involved citizens like yourselves) that was the driving force behind good things happening in Tarboro. It has never seemed in the past that the town council was the main drivers of change in Tarboro. I am not saying that is the way things should be, but... At least they should stay out of the way and will not be a stumbling block.

I have a few cents to toss in regarding the role of the town government. I'll post it over in the "GOT Projects" thread under "Town Politics," and hopefully get a conversation going.
