What is lurking in Tarboro?
Actually the question is who is lurking in Tarboro?
In Internet culture, a lurker is a person who reads the postings in a discussion forum but does not contribute to the discussion.
According to my behind the scenes stats, this website has anywhere from 50 to 100 unique visitors each day. I can tell that many of you visit more than one page of the web site before sliding off into cyberspace and that many of you return again on a fairly regular basis.
Lurking is not uncommon, in fact, in most online communities, 90% of visitors are lurkers who never contribute, 9% of visitors contribute a little, and 1% of visitors account for almost all the action. So, it seems as though there is nothing out of the ordinary happening here.
Still, I wonder if there is something I can do to draw some of you out from your lurking lairs and hear your opinions on what I write about or even what I don't write about but should.
There is no need to register or use your real name. I have no way of discovering who you are. You can post with complete anonymity.
You can leave a comment following any blog entry or you can start a brand new discussion on the Tarboro is Talking page.
Not only would I like to hear what you have to say, I'm certain that the people who visit this site would also like to hear your ideas and opinions.
If you do decide to leave a few words, don't worry if no one responds, we know they are out there, watching, reading and lurking in Tarboro.
I've learned this evening that I prefer lurkers to those who post the same comment several times (cut & paste) in multiple places on the blog using multiple fake names to appear to be several people sharing the same (verbatim) opinion.
It just goes to show you...be careful what you wish for.
